The place
This bar-restaurant was located in the Chalon block, a quadrilateral in the 12th arrondissement of Paris bounded by Rue de Chalon, Avenue Daumesnil, Boulevard Diderot, and Rue de Rambouillet, adjacent to the Gare de Lyon. Established in 1847 alongside the train station, the block included workshops, warehouses, and workers' housing; Chinese workers from Wenzhou settled here after World War I, making it the first Chinatown in the capital. Considered very degraded by the mid-1970s, it was demolished starting in 1984 — seven hundred small housing units torn down — to make way for a new neighborhood that erased its original appearance.
