The place
The belfry of Bergues is a municipal tower that dominates the heart of this fortified town in French Flanders, in the Nord department. Built of brick since the Middle Ages, it has been destroyed and rebuilt several times over the centuries; it was dynamited by retreating German troops in 1944, and was restored and inaugurated again in 1961. Its tower houses a carillon of about fifty bells, some of which, salvaged from the ruins, date back to the 17th and 18th centuries, and which rings particularly for the market and local festivities. Classified as a historical monument, it has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2005 as part of the group of "belfries of Belgium and France."
