The place

The water tower of Palavas-les-Flots, standing about 45 meters high, was built in the early 1940s (around 1942-1943) to supply the seaside resort with drinking water, a function it maintained until the late 1990s. Its massive concrete silhouette, long nicknamed "the mushroom" because of its shape, was slated for demolition. In the late 1990s, the municipality instead chose to rehabilitate it: between 1998 and 2000, the tank was converted into a panoramic tower topped with a revolving restaurant, inaugurated in February 2000 under the name "Phare de la Méditerranée". Despite this name, the building has never had a maritime signaling function; it owes its designation to its slender shape and its role as a belvedere. Becoming one of the symbols of the resort, it has since offered a 360° view of the Languedoc coastline and the surrounding ponds from its platform.
