The place
Defensive work of Chatham, built in 1756 at the southern end of the Brompton Lines to cover the arsenal and the Medway estuary against a French attack, then considerably expanded during the Napoleonic Wars. Its network of galleries carved into the chalk can be visited, and the site is today a heritage park open year-round.
