The place
The Għar Tuta cave is a large natural cavity located in the territory of Mellieħa, in the northwestern part of Malta. Carved into the limestone of the island, it is so spacious that full-grown trees grow inside it, and it contains several smaller cavities within. The site bears traces of ancient human occupations, in the form of niches and hollows carved directly into the rock. Today, it is popular with hikers, climbers, and rappel enthusiasts, attracted by its spectacular opening overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Some sources identify it with the Latnija cave, where excavations have revealed evidence of Mesolithic occupation, but this correspondence remains to be confirmed.
