The place
Gunsite Road is a small rural road located south of the village of West Kennett, near Marlborough, in Wiltshire, England. Its name comes from an old shooting range ("gun site") established on site in the 1950s; Ordnance Survey maps refer to it as "Gunsite," while other heritage surveys retain the spelling "Gunsight." The road runs through the Avebury site, a UNESCO World Heritage site rich in prehistoric monuments. It notably serves the West Kennet Long Barrow, one of the largest and best-preserved Neolithic chambered barrows in Britain, and passes near the remains of the Neolithic palisade enclosures of West Kennet. Silbury Hill and the large stone circle of Avebury are also located nearby.
