The place
The Site 9 hangar, located in Palmdale, California, is a large aerospace assembly building situated at the southeast corner of Air Force Plant 42, a military-industrial complex in Antelope Valley, in the desert north of Los Angeles. Developed by Rockwell International in the early 1980s, it served for the assembly of the B-1B Lancer strategic bomber — all one hundred units produced were assembled there — as well as for work related to the space shuttle. The largest of its two workshops, Building 703, is among the most impressive assembly hangars in the country, featuring a hall that extends for over two hundred meters. Owned by Los Angeles World Airports, the site has since been repurposed: Building 703 now hosts operations of NASA's Armstrong Flight Research Center, including its airborne laboratory DC-8, while the neighboring hangar houses the fabrication of tramway cars. Its unusual size and isolation have also made it a space occasionally rented for film shoots.
