The place
The Saint-Sulpice Church is one of the largest religious buildings in Paris, located in the 6th arrondissement, in the heart of the Saint-Germain-des-Prés district. Its construction, which began in the 17th century on older foundations, spanned over a century and involved several successive architects, giving it a facade with a double colonnade that remains unfinished. Inside, an astronomical gnomon installed in 1727 to determine the date of Easter crosses the transept through a meridian line made of brass, extended by a white marble obelisk. The chapel of the Saints-Angels houses a set of murals created by Eugène Delacroix between 1855 and 1861, including The Struggle of Jacob with the Angel and Heliodorus Driven from the Temple. The building is also renowned for its grand organ, rebuilt by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll and inaugurated in 1863, considered one of the most imposing instruments of its maker.
