Mediterranean Film Studios

The place

The Mediterranean Film Studios are film studios located in Kalkara, on the east coast of Malta, near Fort Rinella. Established in the mid-1960s — a first shooting tank was set up in 1964 — under the name Malta Film Facilities, they were renamed Mediterranean Film Studios in 1978. The site has specialized in aquatic and underwater shots, featuring large outdoor tanks known as "horizon" tanks, where the water surface visually blends with the sea, creating the illusion of action on the open sea without special effects. The facility includes three tanks: two large outdoor tanks (the first, shallow one dating from 1964, and a second, deeper one added in 1979) as well as a covered tank designed for effects in a controlled environment. More than a hundred international productions have been filmed here, particularly for their maritime sequences. The complex is currently operated by the Maltese state under the name Malta Film Studios.
