The place
The Buckinghamshire residence, whose central body was rebuilt around 1683 for the Temple-Grenville family, was then altered throughout the 18th century into a neoclassical ensemble reflecting the political fortune of its owners. Its gardens, designed from the 1710s by Charles Bridgeman and later by Lancelot "Capability" Brown, are among the first examples of the English landscape garden and have influenced designs across Europe. Classified as Grade I, the house is now home to Stowe School, while the park is owned by the National Trust.
