The scene : The Moroccan exteriors serve as the backdrop for the prologue of "Africa Nova," where the Roman army besieges the hometown of Lucius.

Ouarzazate, Morocco

Large studio complex north of Ouarzazate on the N9 road, one of the largest in the world by area, with permanent sets for epics and biblical films.

The scene : The backlot houses the set of the coastal town of "Numidia" (reused from Kingdom of Heaven), the arena where Lucius faces CGI-created baboons, and a kasbah transformed into a flashback village topped with digital pyramids.

Kalkara, Malta

17th century military fort guarding the southern entrance of the Grand Harbor in Valletta, Malta; managed by the Malta Film Commission, it also appears as King's Landing (Red Keep) in Game of Thrones. Built in 1670, it has also served as a fort and a hospital.

The scene : Main filming location of the film: the fort houses life-sized sets of the Colosseum, including the flooded arena where Lucius fights amidst digital sharks during the reconstruction of a naumachia.

Kalkara, Malta

Maltese studios renowned for their immense horizon tank pools, among the largest in Europe for water shoots. They were created in 1963.

The scene : The open-air filming basins are used for close-up shots of the naval battle at the Colosseum.

Gżira, Malta

Star-shaped 18th-century fort built by the Order of Saint John on Manoel Island, in the port of Marsamxett; restored after the damages of World War II. Constructed in 1723, it is a Grade 1 bastioned fortification.

The scene : The courtyard and buildings of the fort represent the training school where the gladiators are trained.

19th-century polygonal fort built by the British at the southeast tip of Malta, now closed to the public due to coastal erosion.

The scene : The vaulted corridors of the fort serve as interior tunnels beneath the Colosseum.
