Castle San Cristóbal is a Spanish fortress located in the historic district of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Built to protect the city from land-based attacks, it complemented Castillo San Felipe del Morro, which overlooked the maritime entrance to the bay. Its construction was mostly carried out between 1765 and 1783, as part of military reforms enacted during the reign of Charles III of Spain, and it became the largest fortification ever built by Spain in the New World. The complex comprises several independent defensive units — bastions, casemates, redoubts, and batteries — along with the famous Garita del Diablo, a lookout post isolated above the waves. Today part of the San Juan National Historic Site and managed by the National Park Service, the site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.
