San Juan, Puerto Rico

Castle San Cristóbal is a Spanish fortress located in the historic district of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. Built to protect the city from land-based attacks, it complemented Castillo San Felipe del Morro, which overlooked the maritime entrance to the bay. Its construction was mostly carried out between 1765 and 1783, as part of military reforms enacted during the reign of Charles III of Spain, and it became the largest fortification ever built by Spain in the New World. The complex comprises several independent defensive units — bastions, casemates, redoubts, and batteries — along with the famous Garita del Diablo, a lookout post isolated above the waves. Today part of the San Juan National Historic Site and managed by the National Park Service, the site has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983.

The scene : The fort of 'Cadix', where an old man pulled from the sea reveals to the Spaniards the existence of the Fountain of Youth, is the Castillo San Cristóbal in Old San Juan.

Fajardo, Puerto Rico

The scene : At the end of the film, the deserted island where Jack leaves Angelica is the small cay of Palominito, off the coast of Fajardo, at the eastern tip of Puerto Rico.

The scene : The interiors were filmed at Pinewood Studios: the Gibbs courtroom, the king's dining room, the port street, and the "Captain's Daughter" inn.

East Molesey, United Kingdom

Hampton Court Palace is a royal palace located in East Molesey, on the banks of the River Thames, about twenty kilometers southwest of central London. Its construction began in 1514 for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, the chief minister of Henry VIII, who made it one of the most extravagant residences in the kingdom. Falling out of favor, Wolsey ceded the palace to the king in 1529; Henry VIII greatly expanded it and resided there throughout his six marriages. By the end of the 17th century, sovereigns William III and Mary II commissioned architect Christopher Wren for a vast Baroque reconstruction intended to rival Versailles, which remained unfinished. The building thus juxtaposes two contrasting architectural styles, one Tudor in red brick, the other Baroque in Portland stone, and today is one of the major historical monuments open to the public in England. It is designated as a Grade I listed building in the UK.

The scene : The courtyard of "St James' Palace", where Jack and Gibbs find themselves transported after the trial, is that of Hampton Court Palace.
