The place
Studio 28 is an independent cinema located at 10, Rue Tholozé, in the Montmartre district (Paris 18th). Inaugurated in February 1928 by Jean-Placide Mauclaire, it is considered the first avant-garde cinema in Paris, entirely dedicated to cinematic research. A meeting place for painters, poets, and filmmakers, it has welcomed figures such as Luis Buñuel, Jean Cocteau, and Abel Gance, and has programmed bold works. After the war, it was taken over by the Roulleau brothers and reopened in 1950 with a hall adorned with fixtures designed by Jean Cocteau. Today classified as Art and Essay, it remains one of the oldest independent cinemas in the capital.
