Colonial Street (Universal backlot)

The place

Colonial Street is a permanent residential street in the backlot of Universal Studios, in Universal City, California. Its first houses were built in 1946 on soundstage 12 for the film "So Goes My Love", then stored and moved in 1950 to the northern edge of the backlot, on the former layout of River Road; the whole area was then named Colonial Street after the "Colonial Mansion", the first residence on the street. Designed as a modular American suburb set, it features about fifteen facades of various styles and has served as the backdrop for more than sixty years of filmmaking and television production. It was extensively remodeled in 1988 for the comedy "The 'Burbs", with the removal of the house from "Leave It to Beaver" and the redesign of Circle Drive. From 2004 to 2012, it became particularly known as "Wisteria Lane", a recurring set for the series "Desperate Housewives", before being partially cleared of those adaptations to accommodate other productions.
