Burnaby waterfront park developed on the site of the former Barnet sawmill, active from 1899 to the 1950s. The pier and the pilings that are still visible at low tide are the last remnants of this.

Former Stanley Park zoo, established in 1888 from an orphaned bear rescued by the park's caretakers. A municipal referendum in 1993 sealed its closure: the animals left in 1996, but the concrete polar bear pit remained on site.

The scene : Theodore Roosevelt Zoo on screen: devastated by Vanessa's death, Wade attempts to end his life by jumping into the polar bear enclosure.
