The set was adjacent to Laramie Street, a western street later renamed Industrial Street, Mockingbird Lane, and then Elm Street. The nearby body of water, Singapore Lake, has become Jaws Lake for the Studio Tour attraction, and the site itself has hosted the Chicken Ranch set since 1983.
The scene : It is here, on the hill overlooking the former Singapore Lake and bordering Laramie Street, that Hitchcock filmed the exteriors of the house and the motel. At the time, the set was just a two-faced shell — the façade and the left wall — because the camera did not show any more than that.

Victorian house decor built in 1959 on the Universal backlot from standard studio elements to reduce costs; its facade and turret replicate those of the house from the film Harvey (1950), which stood on Colonial Street. Originally a simple two-faced shell, it received its right wall in 1963 for Invitation to a Gunfighter, followed by its rear in 1983 for Psycho II — it now has four sides and a roof, distinguishing it from the facades of the lot. Moved three times, it now sits near Old Falls Lake, restored, alongside a portion of the motel. A major attraction of the Tram Tour since 1964.
The scene : The setting of the Bates house as it can be seen today — but it is no longer where Hitchcock filmed it: moved three times on the lot, it has stood since the mid-1980s at the edge of Old Falls Lake, a few hundred meters from its 1960 location.
